960 Fifth Avenue
A limestone landmark on the site of the old Clark mansion.
960 Fifth Avenue rises on Fifth Avenue at East 77th Street, facing Central Park. Designed by Warren and Wetmore with Rosario Candela and completed in 1928, the limestone building holds a small collection of very large cooperative residences and one of the last grand apartment houses to line the avenue.
The building
960 Fifth is clad in Indiana limestone and known for the scale of its apartments, many of fourteen to seventeen rooms with generous service quarters. The building famously houses a private in-house restaurant, the Georgian Suite, with its own entrance around the corner on East 77th Street.
The story of 960 Fifth Avenue
The building was developed by Anthony Campagna on the site of the demolished William A. Clark mansion, one of the most extravagant private houses ever built in New York. Its completion in 1928 marked Fifth Avenue's transformation from a street of mansions into one of grand cooperative apartment houses.
Notable residents
The building has long drawn a discreet, prominent ownership. Preston Pope Satterwhite occupied a celebrated seventeen-room apartment here, part of a lineage that has kept 960 Fifth among the most coveted addresses on Central Park.
