551 West 21st Street is a boutique luxury condominium designed by Foster + Partners, the practice of Norman Foster, with Beyer Blinder Belle as associate architect, developed by SR Capital and GTIS Partners and completed in 2015. A 19-story building of 44 large-scale residences, it was Foster's first residential project in the United States, set behind a white precast-concrete and polished-brass facade half a block from the High Line.
The building
The residences run large, many full-floor, with 11-foot ceilings, oak herringbone floors, and floor-to-ceiling windows set in deep facade reveals for perimeter seating. Arrival is through a gated drive court wrapped by a twenty-foot green wall, into a thirty-four-foot double-height lobby with a prismatic glass wall. Three penthouses crown the building.
