The building

A masterwork of the prewar era, 740 Park pairs a restrained limestone facade with some of the largest layouts ever built in Manhattan, duplexes and triplexes crowned by a three-story penthouse. It was designed by Rosario Candela, the period's most celebrated apartment architect, with Arthur Loomis Harmon.

The story of 740 Park

The building was developed by James T. Lee, whose granddaughter, Jacqueline Bouvier, later Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, spent part of her childhood here. John D. Rockefeller Jr. kept an apartment from the late 1930s, and the building became the subject of Michael Gross's 2005 book, 740 Park: The Story of the World's Richest Apartment Building.

Notable residents

Residents past and present have included John D. Rockefeller Jr., the financier Stephen Schwarzman, who acquired Rockefeller's former apartment, and the late David Koch, part of a roster that has given 740 Park its reputation as the most rarefied cooperative in New York.

The neighborhood

740 Park sits in Lenox Hill on the Upper East Side, steps from Central Park, the Frick Collection, and Madison Avenue. Read the full picture in our Upper East Side real estate guide.

Why buyers choose 740 Park Avenue

Pedigree and scale. Few addresses in the world carry the cachet of 740 Park, and its enormous, light-filled duplexes and triplexes almost never come to market.
